FileScout Changelog Details [2009-2011]

2011/11/15 - FileScout 2.7.1.7

HOTFIX

What's Changed

  • eMail Archive function fix (was broken in v2.7.1.5)
After archiving a Message the folder (in which the message was saved) was not opened automatically.
This is fixed in 2.7.1.6 (which should not had been available) & 2.7.1.7
  • [SHIFT]+[X] key shortcut
Will now also work if the favorite chooser is open
Will now also work if the history chooser is open
Will now also work if the directory chooser (tree) is open
  • Dropbox Plugin fix (v1.2.7.1.6)
The FileScout Dropbox plugin comes with a own Dropbox directory structure cache (simply cause to avoid hammering the dropbox API Server with 'listing' requests)
This information will be verified after 24h automatically (or manually by choosing refresh from the #Menu)
When the content of a directory did not changed on your Dropbox in this 24h then the FileScout Dropbox Plugin failed to show you the directory content (and showed instead *Empty*)
Simply re-open the Dropbox Plugin again would have showed you the content afterwards
So this quite annoying bug has been fixed in v1.2.7.1.6 of the FileScout Dropbox Plugin
  • A private note: I am very sorry for this inconvenience - forcing you again into another device reboot cycle. I should had detect these bugs before the actual release of FileScout v2.7.1.5. - but I did not - all I can do is to apologize for this flaw. I have not meet my own expectations.

2011/11/09 - FileScout 2.7.1.5

Maintenance Release & Dropbox APIv1

Quick OTA-Update Link

Update via BlackBerry AppWorld™ is required when you want to make use of the BBM™ integrated features.
If you are using the FileScout Dropbox Plugin you should check that you have the latest Version (v1.2.7.1.5) installed It's recommend to updated the Plugin first and when asked for the required reboot, say 'later' and then instantly update FileScout as well. When you are prompted then for the reboot, confirm the reboot.

Have you seen the new guy in town? - TOMPlayer!

  • You are using FileScout cause the build in file manager does not satisfy your needs - right?
  • Are you unhappy with the functionality the build in media player has to offer?
  • Have you tried the latest emacberry.com application yet?
  • Get the free TOMPlayer App and see what you can expect from a decent media player application.
  • Get TOMPlayer now!

What's Changed in FileScout

  • When multiple applications have registered itself as content handler for a file type FileScout will show a application chooser. So now you can select if you like to open a file with application 'A' or with application 'B' [if 'A' & 'B' have registered itself for the same file type (mimetype/extension/suffix)]
  • When you create a playlist the content of the playlist will be sorted (depending on your current FileScout sorting settings)
  • New key shortcut to close FileScout instantly: [SHIFT]+[X]
  • Some performance improvements when working with the TextViewer/Editor (the hourglass should appear less often - if at all)
  • EMail-Archive function: Instead of the Message-HashCode a TimeStamp will be used in order to create a Message-Subfolder (for some reason there have been reports that the message hash was not 'unique-enough')
  • *.M4B files will be considered as playable Audio files.
  • FileScout will check the compatibility with the installed Dropbox Plugin (and automatically open the Browser if an update of the Plugin is required)
  • Filescout Dropbox Plugin - Dropbox APIv1 Support:
Since the 22'nd of October Dropbox have released a new Version of the API. The FileScout Dropbox Plugin will now make use of the new APIv1. Basically you should not really notice a difference. Please see the list below for the changes:
    • When you want to upload a file to your Dropbox the Plugin now will list all content of your account (not only the directories/folder structure) - so now you can see if a certain file is already is present in your Dropbox
    • Create a temp Share Link for any file in your Dropbox
No matter if you download or upload a file - for any item displayed in your Dropbox you can create a time restricted (temp) link that you can send to anybody (even without a Dropbox account) in order to share the item
Simply highlight the file and select 'Share' from the BlackBerry Menu - after a short wile you get a dialog showing the link information (containing the information for how long the link is valid))
The link (URL) will be automatically copied into your device clipboard so you can paste it where ever you like (eMail, twitter, facebook, etc...)
Please note that you can create also Share links for a Dropbox folder - in this case Dropbox will made the complete content (including all Subfolders) available in a ZIP-Archive - so use this function wise!
    • For OS6.x and OS7.x the authentication works now completely via the official Dropbox Website (accessed via the BlackBerry Browser) - So there is no need to enter your Dropbox account information into the FileScout App anylonger
  • OS7.x main application icon size adjusted - @Rezn I hope that's fine now

2011/09/27 - FileScout 2.7.1.3

BBM™ connected - optimization

What's Changed

  • This build implemented the switch between the default FileScout Version and the 'BBM™ connected' Edition in a complete different way. This should make it again possible to launch FileScout via 3'rd Party Launcher applications that have issues with the previous implemented switch. This should also fix the issue that in some cases (permission related) FileScout could not be started at all.
  • Fixed 'Module Verification Errors' reported by some users (after BBM6 was installed).

2011/07/11 - FileScout 2.7.0.8

BBM™ 6.0 Integration

What's Changed

  • FileScout is now supporting the new BlackBerry Messenger SDK. With the BBM™ Integration you are able to send any file to any of your BBM Contacts [requires BBM 6.0.0.111 (or higher)]. Please note that even FileScout is already support the sending of multiple files, right now you have to select the recipient and confirm the send process for each of the selected files separate. I hope this can be changed with later releases of RIM's BBM-SDK.
  • The image manipulation (rotate & resize) can now be also called directly from the build in ImageViewer
  • Since the release of 2.6.x it was not possible any longer to enter text in Japanese, Chinese or Korean language in the TextEditor. This has been fixed in the new build.
  • If you make use of the HomeScreen Application Shortcuts, FileScout can be instantly launched by pressing the 'F'-Key
  • Multiple other minor bugfixes

2011/06/28 - FileScout 2.6.0.6

2011/04/05 - FileScout 2.5.0.5

Torch OS 6.0.0.526 issues / small additional fixes

It is a bit sad that with ever new OS6 release for the Torch additional workarounds have to be implemented in order that FileScout will work as designed (and as it works on all other OS Versions or Devices). After the update to OS 6.0.0.526 the context menu will be always displayed when you try to open a file or directory. This issue was also present with OS 6.0.0.448 but it had disappeared again with OS 6.0.0.450 - so my initial thought was that RIM had fixed it with .450. Well it looks like that I have to take care of this issue myself - instead of hoping RIM is going to resolve this (BTW - it's not only FileScout that is affected by this - other popular Apps like Xobni are affected as well).

What's Changed

  • After the Torch OS have updated to OS 6.0.0.458 the Context menu showed up after using the touch screen to change the current directory or open a file. This ContextMenu will now be suppressed by the new build.
    • This issue also effect the FileScout Dropbox Plugin which was also updated.
    • When you are a Torch User who have installed the new OS 6.0.0.456 then please follow this procedure:
      1. Go to BlackBerry Options - Device - Application Management
      2. Scroll down in the list and select 'Filescout Dropbox Plugin' (v1.2.5.0.x)
      3. Deinstall the Plugin and when asked for a reboot select "no" (or later)
      4. Now update your FileScout Installation to v2.5.0.5 and now perform the requested reboot
      5. After the device have rebooted: just install the Dropbox Plugin as you did initially (see: User Manual - Dropbox Plugin)
  • DriveUsage calculation fix
  • ImageViewer background preloading optimizations

2011/01/29 - FileScout 2.5.0.2

Torch only - OS 6.0.0.450 issues

What's Changed

  • After the Torch OS have updated to OS 6.0.0.450 the navigation with the touch screen can fail [or looks like that the user input (touch/click) will be ignored] - The new FileScout build 2.5.0.2 have implemented a work around for this issue in order to get the behavior as everybody is used too - before the OS was updated on the Torch. More details can be found in a forum post 'Torch OS 6.0.0.450 - Touch Screen issues with FileScout'
  • This also effect the FileScout Dropbox Plugin which was also updated.
  • When you are a Torch User who have installed the new OS 6.0.0.450 then please follow this procedure:
    1. Go to BlackBerry Options - Device - Application Management
    2. Scroll down in the list and select 'Filescout Dropbox Plugin' (v1.2.5.0.1)
    3. Deinstall the Plugin and when asked for a reboot select "no" (or later)
    4. Now update your FileScout Installation to v2.5.0.2 and now perform the requested reboot
    5. After the device have rebooted: just install the Dropbox Plugin as you did initially (see: User Manual - Dropbox Plugin)

2011/01/14 - FileScout 2.5.0.1

The Plugin have to be installed separately OTA. Therefore you will find in the FileScout options a new Section called Dropbox Options. When the Plugin is not present you will find there a button which allows you to install the FileScout Dropbox Plugin OTA directly from FileScout just with a single click.
After the Plugin is installed you need to specify your Dropbox login details (email & password) and press the login button. After your login have been verified you can start to access your Dropbox from FileScout.

    • FileScout is caching the folder and file structure of your Dropbox if you like to force a refresh you can do this via the Refresh #Menu
    • Display file or folder details for any item on your Dropbox (key short cut [O|I])
    • FileScout Dropbox Options:
      • Logout - disconnect FileScout from your Dropbox account
      • Enable/disable Online Warning Message (warning about transfer volume)
      • When you use "Auto" as FileScout Options/General Options/Preferred Network setting you can disable certain fallback transports - e.g. when your BES Admin have blocked access to the Dropbox URL.

Dropbox Icons are based on the SILK Icons created by Mark James http://www.famfamfam.com/
WARNING: The FileScout Dropbox Plugin has the potential to transfer extremely large volumes of data using your carrier's network. Please be aware that this could result in large overage charges over the course of a month if you do not have an unlimited data plan. Regardless of your data plan, please consider configuring FileScout to use WiFi (FileScout Options/General Options/Preferred Network set to either Auto or WiFi) whenever available as an alternate to using your carrier's network.

2010/11/14 - FileScout 2.2.0.2

Screen capture capabilities & Playlist enhancements

What's New

  • ScreenScout - Use FileScout to capture your BlackBerry® Device display from anywhere.
This new FileScout version will come with a integrated fully configurable screenshot application. FileScoutLite user can also make use of this new feature (the Lite Version will add some overlay to the screenshot). Of course you need to grant FileScout the permission (in the BlackBerry® device application permission configuration) to capture the screen of the device.
The capture operation can be accessed in two ways (if not disabled in the options)
    1. Via the Global Menu entry 'ScreenShot with FileScout'
In any application you simply can select the 'ScreenShot with FileScout' menu item to capture the current screen (of course without the menu visible).
Unfortunately the global menu is not always accessible (or does not include the system wide menu items) in this case the you should use the 'ScreenScout' background application to capture the screen.
    2. Via the ScreenScout background application (recommended)
Simply open the TaskSwitcher (hold ALT any press ESC or on newer OS: hold down the BB-Menu-Button) and select the 'ScreenScout - Capture with FileScout' application. By simply selecting the background application FileScout will capture the current screen (incl. all popup dialogs) and will save it as image into the specified screenshot directory.
Configuration 'FileScout Image & ScreenShot Options' (Lite Version: 'ScreenShot Options'):
    • 'ScreenShot Directory'
Specify the destination directory for all the screenshots you are going to create (a directory need to be defined in order to use the new functionality).
    • 'Autoname ScreenShots'
When this option is enabled the screenshots will get the default file name "ScreenCapture" (already existing screenshots will not be overwritten instead the new screenshot will be autorenamed. If this checkbox is deactivated you will be prompted each time to enter the filename for the new screenshot.
    • 'Add Timestamp to file name' (not available in Lite Version)
The screenshot file name will automatically get a timestamp information in the format 'YYYYMMDD-HHMM' at the end.
    • 'Open ScreenShot Directory after operation'
After taking a screenshoot FileScout will be opened so that you can instantly do what ever is required with the new created screenshot image.
    • 'Add Global ScreenShot Menu'
If you don't like to have the Global 'ScreenShot with FileScout' MenuItem you can simply deactivate it with this checkbox (a reboot/battery pull required to take effect).
    • ''Launch ScreenShot Background Application on system start'
Same applies to the additional ScreenScout Application that will be automatically launched in the background at system start. If you don't like that the background app will be launched uncheck this checkbox (a reboot/battery pull required to take effect).
    • You can also select between PNG or JPEG (including the compression level) as screenshot file format.
  • Creation of PlayLists more user friendly - show warning when no Playlist directory is configured - creating recursive Playlists can be canceled
  • Additional Key-ShortCut [SHIFT]+[L]: PlayList Recursive
  • The TextEditor allow you to use a own/different FontFamily (can be configured in the Options)

In order to receive a file via Bluetooth on your BlackBerry® navigate with FileScout to your destination folder (in which you would like to save the file that you are going to receive) and then select from the #Menu 'Receive file via Bluetooth'. FileScout is now switching into it's listening-mode and waits till you start the file transfer from the other Bluetooth device.

This allows you to load a file (in the FileScout integrated TextEditor/Viewer) with a device dependent encoding (like 'EUC-JP', 'Shift-JIS' or 'ISO-2022-JP'). Please note that the encoding have to be supported by your device. FileScout is checking if the specified encoding is supported and only accept the input when it's valid (device dependent). • Upscale smaller Images [default: ON]
      • Prefetch all Images in directory [default: ON]
FileScout can preload the images in the current directory for faster viewing. Please note cause of device memory limitations it could be, that not all images could be preloaded. FileScout will automatically load only as much images as fit into the device memory
      • Filename display (time in sec) [default: 3 sec]
FileScout will display the filename of the current image as overlay at the bottom of the screen. You can specify the time in seconds how long this overlay should appear. You can specify 0 seconds to turn off this feature.
  • Bluetooth enhancements
    • Available Bluetooth device list will start with 'Please wait...' to indicate that FileScout is searching for Bluetooth devices (instead of *empty*)
    • Massive performance improvements in the Search for available Bluetooth devices.

What's fixed?

  • FileScout is able to find and use a Bluetooth device when more then one device is in the range of your BlackBerry® (in previous versions the list of available devices was always empty in this case).

2010/03/17 - FileScout hotfix 1.6.3.2

2010/02/27 - FileScout release of 1.6.3.0

FileScout -or- 100% free FileScoutLite

New Features: eMail Archive function - Search enhancements - Drive Usage

In Detail: What's new? What have changed?

  • FileScout comes now in two Versions:
    • 100% free FileScoutLite Version with the core functionality:
      • File system browser for your BlackBerry® (including hidden files)
      • Create directories, copy, move, rename, or delete files
      • Copy and delete complete directory structures
      • Show details for files & directories [modification date, is hidden, etc...]
      • Open all media files (supported by your BlackBerry®)
      • Text Viewer (e.g. for ini, xml, etc.)
      • Zip-Archive handling
    • Full FileScout Version which requires a 'Registration Code' with the additional features:
      • File Search
      • Thumbnail display for images
      • Image manipulation
      • Text Editor
      • Send files via eMail/Bluetooth
      • eMail Archive function
      • Playlist creation
      • Favorite-Directory handling
      • Directory Tree navigation (Goto...)
      • AutoUpdate check
      • Support via eMail
Before you purchase your copy of FileScout make use of the 14 day trial period.
  • Autocheck for available updates (every 7 days) - never miss a new version of FileScout - could be disabled in the options
  • Search dialog improvements:
    • A running Search can be canceled
    • Support for deletion of files from the Search Result list (also via [DEL]-Key)
    • Selection via [SHIFT] + Nav UP|DOWN
  • Thumbnail Generation optimization: Specify directories that should be excluded from the Thumbnail persistence
  • eMail Archive function:
    • Directly from the BlackBerry® Message Application you can select an eMail and store it's content (incl. all meta data) to a previously specified directory of your device (e.g. on your SDSCard). FileScout then will create a substructure (YEAR, MONTH, DAY) and store the eMail with all data that is accessible via RIM's API in one folder per message.
    • Additionally to the raw data of the message FileScout can create a rendition of the Message - either in HTML or in plain text depending on the message format. These files then can be opened anytime - no matter if the original message is still present on your device or not.
    • Download of external images of HTML-Messages [incl. an option to force transfer via the devices TCP (instead of using your BES connection)]
    • 'Reply/Reply All' from FileScout to an archived message (plain text messages will be quoted)
    • Known issues (caused of limitations in RIM's API):
      • Most attachments of an eMail can't be stored in the eMail-Archive (FileScout will give you a warning for all attachments that can't be retrieved through the API).
      • HTML-eMails: Not all (or probably all) of the embedded images are accessible (FileScout will give you a warning for all attachments that can't be retrieved through the API).
      • When using the option 'Use MessageApp to show eMails that have been archived with FileScout':
        • HTML-eMails can't be created with the BlackBerry® Message composer that's why they can't be restored in the BlackBerry® Message Application
        • PlainText-eMails that have larger content can't be created with the BlackBerry® Message composer. The API will give you a warning that the message have been truncated.
      • Even if the API offers methods to request all missing content for a message from the Server - sometimes the result is different when you use 'More All' from the BlackBerry® MessageApplication for a message or let FileScout request the missing portions. It was very frustrating to get no way around that within the FileScout code, so the recommendation is to use 'More All' from the Message Application before you use the 'Archive with FileScout' function. This might be related to the BES configuration.
  • Drive Usage Map:
    • Display for each root of your device the disk space usage across its structure. For each directory you will get the following information:
      • Disk usage of the current directory (only if the current directory contains files)
      • Number of files in the current directory (only if the current directory contains files)
      • Disk usage of the directory including all it's sub directories (only if any sub directory contain files)
    • Delete directories (including sub structures)
    • Open a directory from the tree structure
    • Known issues:
      • No horizontal scroll for Storm & Storm2
  • New Editor Option: 'Autobackup on Save'
If enabled in the options FileScout will create a backup each time of the current file when a save is performed in the integrated text editor.
  • The TextEditor will show a [*] once the text is modified
  • All Tree Dialogs ['DriveUsage' & 'Go to directory'] now support two additional key shortcuts:
    • [T]: Go to the (t)op of the tree
    • [B]: Go to the (b)ottom of the tree
  • Thumbnail display can make use of the BlackBerry® device generated thumbnails that are stored in the 'BBThumbs.dat' files (when available). This implies the following restrictions:
    • Device generated thumbnails might not support AlphaLayers (transparency issues)
    • thumbnail might not match orientation of the original image
    • Not supported for devices running OS5.x.
  • File Details Dialog will show original image width & height in pixel (when information is available from the thumbnail cache)

What's fixed?

  • .amr files will be shown as supported audio files
  • Selection of BBThumbs.dat files via [SPACE]-Key
  • Fix for thumbnail display for images with with extreme ratios
  • Fixes in background process for detecting new directories and sub structures
  • Intend for all tree displays adjusted (now the display looks way more like a tree)
  • Storm(2) & Bold(2) OS5 fixes (e.g. for recursive search or folder details)
  • General display adjustments for Storm & Storm2 (higher columns in all trees and lists).

2009/11/20 - FileScout release of 1.5.2.0

Bugfix - Backup & Restore Favorites

What's fixed?

  • Fix for "Restore of Favorites messed up the Favorites List"
    • Do not restore a old backup (you made since v1.5.0.0 was installed) after you updated to v1.5.2.0 or your Favorites will get messed up again
    • You can clean your broken Favorites List, by:
      1. opening the list
      2. use the [DEL] key to remove all entries.
      3. then create a new List.
    • To be on the safe side: after you have updated to v1.5.2.0 simply create a new backup of your device!

2009/11/17 - FileScout release of 1.5.0.0

After the DevelopersConference in San Francisco some new feature have been implemented - thanks a lot for all the valuable feedback I have received during the conference!

What's new?

  • Display of thumbnails in search result (if thumbnail display is enabled and images are in the 'FileScout Image Cache')
  • Thumbnail-Options: New Button to generate all all thumbnails for all images on your device (incl. the SDCard) - this operation can take a while till it's completed - please be patient!
  • When resizing images to device resolution size you can now select to keep the aspect ratio of the original image. If this option is selected, then FileScout will cut (left & right or top & bottom) of the image so that it will fit to your device screen resolution.
  • UserDefined resolution (image resizing) can be now be max 9999 pixel [but it's recommended not use more then 1200px]
  • Support for DesktopManager Backup & Restore (FileScout settings)
  • A '[W]' in the Screen Title indicating that the background threads (required for Search and other extended features) are still running (after FileScout is started) - once the threads are completed the '[W]' will disappear.
  • Integration in the RIMs FileExplorer Application: a 'Explore with FileScout' MenuItem is added

What's fixed?

  • Search files in the current Directory only function fixed to be usable multiple times
  • Potential OutOfMemeory Error during start of FileScout (when the thumbnail store is getting too large)
  • Accessing OS5 System Folder for Bold, Bold2, Storm and Storm2

For all of you who are waiting to get a "fix" for the System folder on the Bold, Bold2, Storm and Strom2 on OS5.

  • RIM confirmed that they made the System folder in OS5.x read only
  • FileScout (and all other 3'rd party applications) can only show the content of the System folder but can't modify anything

2009/11/02 - FileScout release of 1.4.1.0

What's fixed?

  • The new Simple TextViewer/Editor Option: Select how files will be saved. Either in 'UNIX Format (CR)' (default) or in'Windows Format (CRLF)' is now visible in the Simple TextViewer/Editor Option

2009/10/31 - FileScout release of 1.4.0.0

Even if the changelog for v1.4.0.0 does not list plenty of new features - "under the hood" there have been a lot of changes in order to make FileScout even more stable and memory efficient.

What's new?

  • New Simple TextViewer/Editor Option: Select how files will be saved. Either in 'UNIX Format (CR)' (default) or in'Windows Format (CRLF)'. By default BlackBerry® Devices are storing files in the UNIX Format - which makes editing afterwards e.g. with Windows Notepad a bit difficult.
  • Additional small tweaks for OS5.x Users
  • Storm 2 (9520/9550) will be treated as the Storm 9500/9530 devices (but still no touch screen support yet)
  • Added a MenuItem for the "Go to Directory" [SHIFT]+[G] function
  • Various performance and memory issue improvements

What's fixed?

  • Sometimes FileScout was instantly started again after it was closed by the user (e.g. when during the FileScout session some media files had been opened) - this issue should be solved with this build.

2009/10/10 - FileScout release of 1.3.1.0

This is an update only for OS5.x Users - for other OS Versions this new FileScout Version is not needed at all - that's also the reason why I do not make a big announcement (via the mailing list)

What's fixed?

  • OS 5.x ONLY: Endless loop for system folder fixed - Unfortunately in OS 5.x it's not possible anymore to access the system folder via the file system API. With this Version FileScout will display an error message when the API does not return any content for a folder. This also means that FileScout can't be used to delete pre-installed files located in the subfolders of 'system' for devices that have installed OS 5.x.

2009/09/17 - FileScout release of 1.3.0.0

The "pay-what-you-want" concept seams to be not understood - the meaning of Donationware seams to be difficult to understand. Since the new domain emacberry.com have been launched (begin of June 2009) FileScout have been downloaded 98.878 times (according to the server log files) - the number of donations since 1'st of June 2009 is 321.
This are only 0,00324 donations per download! Even with the very optimistic assumption, that 90% of the downloads are updates of previous versions of FileScout, it's still such a biased proportion, that is going to make me think if the donationware is the right concept.

What's new?

  • New File Associations Option: "Use the BlackBerry® default Browser to open HTML files". In previous versions of FileScout HTML files where always opened with the Media application. With this new Option it's possible to open any HTML files (e.g. from your SDCard) with the default BlackBerry® browser application.
  • New Function in TextViewer/Editor: Toggle WordWrap (ON/OFF)
Unfortunately not available for for Storm users: For some reason, the layout manager does not support horizontal & vertical scrolling of a text field at the same time (looks like a bug in the OS - or I am too stupid?) - when WordWrap was turned of you could scroll horizontal but it was impossible to scroll up/down - I tried all my best to get around this flaw but I was not successful yet - my apologize for this inconvenience.
  • New Simple TextViewer/Editor Option: Auto WordWrap (to select the startup behavior of the TextViewer/Editor) - default value is ON
Unfortunately not available on TouchScreen devices (see above)
  • New functionality in search popup:
    • Select and deselect multiple files in the search result - Key shortcut: [SPACE]
    • Add single file (or selection of files) to virtual Clipboard [so the file(s) can be copied or moved to any destination once the search dialog is closed] - Key shortcut [C|V]
Please note you can repeat as many searches as you like - each time you add a file (or a selection) to the clipboard the number of files in the clipboard is increasing.
    • Checkbox: Search only in the current directory
  • New Simple TextViewer/Editor Option: FontSize - select between: 'small', 'medium', 'default', 'large' or 'I am an old man' (default: DEFAULT)
  • Options are directly accessible from the TextViewer/Editor
  • TextViewer/Editor loading performance improved
  • TextViewer/Editor: new Menu items 'Goto Start' & 'Goto End'
  • TextEditor: new Menu item 'Switch to ReadOnlyMode' -> this will give you access to all new key shortcuts
  • TextViewer/Editor: new key shortcuts (TextEditor have to be in 'ReadOnly' Mode)
[O|P] toggle WordWar(p) (not available on Storm)
    [F|D] open (F)ind popup
    [SHIFT]+[F|D] find next
    [T] goto (t)op of document
    [B|N] goto (b)ottom of document
[Q|W] goto next (W)ord (not available on Storm)
[SHIFT]+[Q|W] goto previous (W)ord (not available on Storm)
[A|S] goto (s)tart of line (not available on Storm)
[E|R] goto (e)nd of line (not available on Storm)
[SPACE] go one page down (not available on Storm)
[SHIFT|ALT]+[SPACE] go on page up (not available on Storm)
[X|Y|Z] switch to EditMode (only if EditMode is enabled in the Options)
  • New Simple TextViewer/Editor Option: Start Editor in ReadOnlyMode
If you have enabled the TextEditor, then you can specify if a file should be automatically opened in the ReadOnly more first. This allows you instantly to navigate with the new key shortcuts once you are opening a text file.
  • New General Option 'Warn when number of files in one directory exceed': You can select between 500|1000|2000|4000 files or no warning at all [DEFAULT: 2000]
When you open a directory with FileScout it takes some time to read the content - you can select at which content size a waring should be displayed in order to get already a feedback to your open action.
  • New Menu Item 'Show vClipboard Content': Will open a popup that is showing you the current content of the virtual Clipboard.
The virtual Clipboard popup supports the following key shortcuts:
    [ENTER] Open containing directory
[DEL|Backspace] Remove selected file/directory from vClipboard
    [ESC] Close the popup dialogue
  • New Menu Item 'eMail <selection>' (when multiple files are selected)
This function will send all files (no directories) that are multi-selected in the current folder. You can select multiple files by using the [SPACE] key. Please have in mind that the total attachment size might be limited by your provider!
  • New Menu Item 'eMail DIRECTORY-NAME' (when a directory is highlighted)
This new function will send all files (no subdirectories) which are in current selected folder. Please have in mind that the total attachment size might be limited by your provider!
  • New 'File associations' Options: In the past FileScout was registering itself automatically as content handler for the MimeType text/txt for various extensions. Now this is configurable for which file extensions you would like to register FileScout as content handler in the BlackBerry® OS. You can select the following extensions: .ini, .log and/or .xml.
Please note, that any change to this setting does only take effect after a full device reboot.

What's fixed?

  • File list scrolling speed tweaked - this version should give you a slight performance boost compared to previous versions of FileScout ;-)
  • File list will be updated, if 'Create New File' or 'Save as...' is used
  • TextEditor 'Save as...' will check, if destination exist

2009/08/26 - FileScout release of 1.2.0.0

What's new?

  • 'BBFileScout' is now called just 'FileScout'
The double 'BB' was removed from the application name cause of legal concerns - actually this change requires, that you have to delete your current BBFileScout installation [Options - Advanced Options - Applications] (reboot might be required) before you can install FileScout v1.2.0.0. I am sorry for this inconvenience.
  • New Option: 'Check for Updates' - allows you directly from FileScout to check, if a new Version of the application is available.
  • Renamed 'Stack' to 'vClipboard' in the hope that this is easier to understand for most of the users how copy and move operations can be performed.
  • New "Search for text" function in the integrated text editor (incl. "Find next" function and case sensitive/case insensitive switch)
  • New keyboard shortcut: [SHIFT]+[M] (M)odify Image
  • New Thumbnail Option: 'Do not try to reload broken images' - when you have specified a 'Thumbnail-Store Directory' FileScout can also store the information about broken images - so the next time folders with broken images are opened there will be no warning message for the same files again.
  • If 'Confirm Delete of files & directories' is enabled, and you want to delete multiple files you have a new checkbox in the confirm dialogue: 'Do not ask again for this selection?' - once this is checked, all files of the selection will be deleted without additional confirmation.

What's fixed?

  • Loading of folders containing more then 1000 files now much faster (again) - progress bar updating fixed

2009/07/11 - BBFileScout release of 1.1.2

What's new?

  • New function: Rotate Images (90°, 180°, -90°) (might require image resizing first)
  • New choice in the 'Image operation Options': Image Size: 'ask each time' - allows you to select the resulting image size each time when you perform an image resize operation

What's fixed?

  • Image Size 'Device Resolution' will adjust the aspect ratio of the image in order to fit the display aspect ratio [this is important when the BlackBerry® device resolution aspect ratio differs from the camera aspect ratio (typically 4:3 these days)].
  • Fallback to JPG when PNG is selected as image format but could not be created
  • Fix for 'Uncaught exceptions' during image resizing

2009/07/06 - BBFileScout release of 1.1 (1.1.0.1)

What's new?

  • New Function: Resize Images -- Over the past couple of years, the file size of photos has increased rapidly due to the "Megapixel War". This can make sending image files from your BlackBerry® device quite expensive (for metered data plans) and time consuming.

BBFileScout v1.1 now allows you to resize images to a user selected resolution -- this will save you time, money, & also saves device or microSD memory! In a completely new 'Image Option' section, this new functionality can be user configured as follows:

    1. Select the target resolution [user defined, 1200px, 1024px, 800px, 640px, device resolution]
    2. Select if the source file should be deleted after the resize image is created
    3. Select PNG or JPG output
      and
    4. If JPG is selected, also choose the JPEG-quality
  • New Option: Show favorites at startup [General Options]
  • URL's in BBFileScout about dialog will open the browser and bring you instantly to the website

What's fixed?

  • Option font size setting will also effect file & directory details dialog
  • File & directory details dialog can be closed by pressing ESC
  • Fix for 'Uncaught exception - ApplicationRegistry.waitFor'

2009/06/27 - BBFileScout release of 1.0.1

What's fixed?

  • Some system/store directories did not showed any files, when sorting was enabled in the options [this is fixed now]
  • Better handling when images could not be read (only a info will be shown for 2sec)
  • Options: 'Use the BB default eMail composer' will be saved & restored correctly

2009/06/21 - BBFileScout release of 1.0

Over the past several months, I have considered significant user feedback as I added all of the essential features in order to make BBFileScout the premier BlackBerry® file system manager. It is with these latest enhancements to the user interface for the Options that I proudly release BBFileScout version 1.0 to the BlackBerry® community. Hopefully, the reviewers and the community at large will agree.

What's new?

  • Options reorganized - on BlackBerry® devices it's quite common to separate the application options into various screens - this makes the options way more organized and easier to understand.
See also the updated BBFileScout options documentation.
  • Path entry fields (Startup Path, Thumbnail Storage & Playlist Directory) show now an additional button that allows you to browse in the file system to make an appropriate selection (in the past this was only possible via the menu)

2009/06/18 - BBFileScout update to 0.7

What's new?

  • Option to specify the maximal size of files that can be opened with the internal BBFileScout text viewer/editor (make your choice depending on the performance of your BlackBerry® device) - In the past the editor had a limit of 250 KiB.
  • Unzip support for Google Earth KMZ files (so that the KML could be read by GPSLogger)

What's fixed?

  • Options: it's now possible the remove a previously specified thumbnail-store directory (in order to disable the complete thumbnail persistence)
  • Options: it's now possible the remove a previously specified startup directory

2009/05/22 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.9

What's new?

  • Hide and unhide files and directories via the File/Directory information popup
  • Option 'Show filenames in Menus' - enables/disables the display of current selected file in the #Menu (default on)

What's fixed?

  • Fixed internal NullPointerException [when updating root]
  • Options: it's now possible the remove a previously specified playlist directory (in order to disable the complete playlist functionality of BBFileScout)

2009/05/16 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.8.1

What's fixed?

  • Fixed NullPointerException when moving files
  • File listing gets reloaded automatically when you toggle the option "show hidden files"

2009/05/12 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.8

What's new?

  • Additional sort option 'by Type' (by file extension)
  • Sort order will be indicated in the file list (behind the one directory up folder/above the file size)
  • Sort type can be changed via key short cut [SHIFT]+[O]|[P]
  • Sort order can be reversed via key short cut [SHIFT]+[U]|[I]

What's fixed?

  • Search will show again filenames & icons (was broken in 0.6.7)
  • Fixed NullPointerException when opening an empty (0 byte) file in the BBFileScout Text Editor
  • Possible internal exception handling improved (still long way to go)

2009/05/10 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.7

What's new?

  • Specify the sort order of the directory content: by file name (files and directories will be separated), by file size (files and directories will be separated), by modification date
  • Send content of plain text files (xml, ini, txt etc.) as SMS
  • Copy & Move of large files (>500KiB) will show a progress bar

What's fixed?

  • Shortcut 'L' (create playlist) will not work as long as no playlist directory is defined in the options

2009/04/24 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.6

What's new?

  • Enhanced Thumbnail handing & loading performance
  • New Options:
    • Thumbnail scale factor (default 2x)

This Choice is only enabled, if you have checked 'Show Thumbnails for Images'.

      • 1x - The thumbnails will have the same height as the selected font
      • 2x - The thumbnails will have the double font height
      • 4x - The thumbnails will have the 4 times font height
    • Thumbnail-Store Directory (default EMPTY)

You can configure BBFileScout that the calculated thumbnails will be stored permanently on your device (and does not need to be calculated each time you use BBFileScout). To enable this feature, you simply have to enter a valid path in which the thumbnail store should be created [the file is called BBFSThumbs.dat]. To disable this feature, simply leave this field empty which is the BBFileScout default setting.

You can either manually type the path of your thumbnail store directory or you move the cursor into the text input field and press the #Menu Button of your device and select the menu item: ?Browse for 'Thubnail-Store Directory'?.

This Text input field 'Thumbnail-Store Directory' is only enabled, if you have checked 'Show Thumbnails for Images'.

  • Key short cut Help Popup Dialogs [select from the menu 'Key short cut' to see all current available key short cuts with a description]

2009/04/22 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.5

What's new?

  • Thumbnail support for images (if enabled in BBFileScout options)
BBFileScout is able to display a small (depending on the selected font site) preview of supported image files.
Please note that this option could eat up a lot of performance of your device, if you open a directory that contain a large number of images that have a file size which is larger the 500KiB. In order to avoid serious performance problems the search result will not display thumbnails for images.
  • BBFileScout will display a 128px preview of image files in the details dialog [Key shortcut: I] The thumbnail creation could take some moments - so please be a bit patient.
  • Select your favorite folder icons:
    default:
    Folder Icon

    Up to Parent Icon
    alternative:
    Folder Icon

    Up to Parent Icon
  • When you have chosen 'Ask each time' in the 'When destination exist' option then it can become quite inconvenient when you will be prompted for plenty of files and you have to select each time the option of your choice. This have been improved: BBFileScout will now remember the first made choice and for the next time the dialog will be displayed the 'OK'-Button is automatically focused.

2009/04/18 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.4

What's new?

  • I am sorry that there is again another update within 24h - but the initial new icons, that I have bought where IMHO not optimal for the BlackBerry® device - so I have worked the last 24h with high pressure on an update for the icons of BBFileScout and finally after spending the night with "pushing pixel around" I am more or less happy with the result:

    Root Icon

    Folder Icon

    Up to Parent Icon

    Audio Icon

    Video Icon

    Image Icon

    ZIP Icon

    Word Icon

    Excel Icon

    Powerpoint Icon

    Text Icon

    PDF Icon

    HTML Icon

    default Icon
I hope now the contrast for the icons is improved and if there is somebody around who would like to help me with further improvements please do not hesitate to get in contact with me.

2009/04/17 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.3 (0.6.2 skipped)

What's fixed

  • I made a very stupid mistake - I trusted a information that was no reliable ? and I did not spend enough time to verify this information. I deeply regret what have happened but I can not make this undone ? I hope tpdkdesign.net & everaldo.com can forgive me for this error - again my apologize.
As consequence all Icons (incl. the main app icon) had to be replaced (I am not confident, if the current symbols will be the final ones ? but at least the I bought them from fasticon.com)

2009/04/16 - BBFileScout update to 0.6.1

What's new?

  • Search will now display the total number of hits (instead of 'search complete')
  • Options [General Settings]:
    • Directory Structure loading Thread ['Slow'|'Normal'|'Fast'] (default: Normal)
The 'Search'- and the 'Goto Directory' function requires that the directory structure of your device gets pre-loaded once the application will be started - the two functions can be only used, once the pre-loading have been completed. With this option you can choose with which priority the directory loading should be performed.
Setting this option to 'slow' will cause that you can use the Search & Goto Directory function after some delay once BBFileScout is started - selecting 'fast' will make these functions quite instantly available but might slow down the general start up process of BBFileScout.

2009/04/11 - BBFileScout update to 0.6

[The change from 0.5.x to 0.6 does not have any specific reason (it's just with the new search function BBFileScout seams to be a complete round package)]

What's new?

  • Search for any file or directory on your BlackBerry® device:
At any time you can press the [SHIFT+S] or [SHIFT+A] short cut which will open the search popup dialog. Now you can enter the file/directory name you are searching for. You can also use the '*' as wildcard char. Here are some examples:
    • Typing 'red*' will find all files or directories that start with 'red'
    • Typing '*red*' will find all files or directories containing the char sequence 'red'
    • Typing '*.png' will find all files with the extension .png
    • Typing '*.' will find all directories (not supported on all OS)
    • Also working - but not recommended: Type '*' to get a complete list of all of your files
After you have pressed the 'Search' button the initial 'Empty' List will be filled with search result hit's (if there are any) - Please note, that the Search result will be sorted alphabetically. You will be informed, that the search is completed by the text 'Search complete' beside the 'Search'-Button itself. Now you can mark any search result hit and either open the Menu or:
    • Press [ENTER] to open the file or directory
Please note, that when you open a file BBFileScout will jump automatically to the parent directory of this file
    • Press [O|P] to open the parent directory in which the file/directory is located (and the specific file/directory will be selected)
    • Press [U|I] to open the file/directory details dialog in order to get additional information like the full file/directory path
Once you opened a file/directory or the parent directory you can go back to your search result by pressing [SHIFT+S] or [SHIFT+A] again - this will show the Search popup Dialog (in the same state as you have let it) again.
  • File details [added property]:
